Snapdragon 4 Gen 5: Specifications, 90 FPS Gaming, 5G and Performance

Qualcomm has officially introduced the Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 Mobile Platform, its latest entry-level smartphone chipset designed to make faster connectivity, improved gaming, and smoother everyday performance more accessible.

Announced on May 7, 2026, the Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 is built on a 4nm process and introduces several notable improvements to Qualcomm's 4-series platform. Its biggest upgrades include a significantly more powerful Adreno GPU, support for 90 FPS gaming for the first time in the Snapdragon 4 series, Release 17 5G connectivity, and improved power efficiency.

Qualcomm's official product brief lists the Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 under model number SM4850 and confirms its 4nm manufacturing process, LPDDR4x memory support, UFS 3.1 storage, and Quick Charge 5 support.


A major GPU upgrade for the Snapdragon 4 series

One of the most interesting aspects of the Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 is its graphics performance.

Qualcomm claims the new Adreno GPU is up to 77% more powerful than the previous generation. More importantly, the Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 becomes the first Snapdragon 4-series platform to support 90 FPS gaming.

That is significant for an entry-level platform. While 90 FPS support does not automatically mean every game will run at 90 FPS, it gives manufacturers a much stronger foundation for affordable gaming smartphones.

For games that support higher frame rates, the combination of a faster GPU and a high-refresh-rate display could make budget devices feel considerably smoother.

The chip supports modern graphics APIs including Vulkan 1.3, OpenGL ES 3.2, and OpenCL 3.0.

2.4GHz Kryo CPU

The Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 features a Qualcomm Kryo CPU with a maximum clock speed of 2.4GHz.

Qualcomm is not publicly specifying the exact Cortex core configuration on its consumer-facing specification page, so it is better to avoid assigning specific Arm core models unless Qualcomm or the device manufacturer confirms them.


Instead, Qualcomm is emphasizing the platform's overall responsiveness.

Its Snapdragon Smooth Motion UI technology is claimed to deliver 43% faster app launches and 25% less screen stutter compared with the previous generation. Qualcomm also claims a 10% improvement in power efficiency.

These improvements could be particularly noticeable in affordable phones where manufacturers typically prioritize battery life and cost over maximum performance.


Release 17 5G is one of its biggest upgrades

Connectivity is another major focus of the Snapdragon 4 Gen 5.

The platform introduces 3GPP Release 17 5G to the Snapdragon 4 series. It supports Sub-6GHz 5G and has a theoretical peak download speed of 2.8Gbps, while peak upload speeds can reach 900Mbps.

Qualcomm is also introducing Smart Network Select 3.0, which can dynamically select the strongest available network connection.

The chipset supports both standalone and non-standalone 5G configurations, alongside LTE and legacy cellular standards.

Dual SIM Dual Active

Another notable feature is Dual SIM Dual Active (DSDA).

Instead of simply supporting two SIM cards, DSDA allows both cellular connections to remain active simultaneously. Qualcomm says the Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 can maintain two lines on 5G or 4G, making the feature particularly useful for users who separate work and personal numbers.

This is an important feature for budget smartphones, particularly in markets where dual-SIM devices are extremely popular.

Wi-Fi 5 remains

Despite its newer 2026 platform, Qualcomm has retained Wi-Fi 5 connectivity.

The Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 supports 802.11ac alongside older Wi-Fi standards and uses a 1x1 antenna configuration. Bluetooth 5.1 is also integrated.

This is one area where the Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 does not attempt to compete with higher-tier Snapdragon platforms. Newer standards such as Wi-Fi 6, Wi-Fi 6E, or Wi-Fi 7 remain outside the platform's feature set.

For inexpensive smartphones, however, Wi-Fi 5 remains perfectly adequate for typical browsing, streaming, social media, and gaming.

Camera support up to 108MP

The Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 also includes Qualcomm's Spectra ISP for image processing.

The platform supports cameras up to 108MP for still photography, as well as dual-camera configurations of up to 16MP + 16MP with zero shutter lag at 30 FPS. It can also support up to 32MP single-camera capture at 30 FPS with zero shutter lag.

Qualcomm has included several computational photography features, including:

● Electronic image stabilization

● Intelligent face detection

● Autofocus

● Automatic exposure

● Automatic white balance

● Multi-frame noise reduction

● Motion-compensated temporal filtering

The chipset can also handle 1080p dual video capture at 30 FPS and 720p slow-motion video at 120 FPS.

However, a chipset supporting a 108MP sensor does not mean every Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 smartphone will have a 108MP camera. The final camera configuration depends on the phone manufacturer and the sensors it chooses.

LPDDR4x memory and UFS 3.1 storage

The Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 supports LPDDR4x memory at up to 2133MHz and UFS 3.1 2-Lane storage.

This combination is interesting because UFS 3.1 is relatively capable for a budget-oriented platform. Faster storage can improve application loading, file transfers, and general system responsiveness.

The memory specification is more conservative, however, with Qualcomm officially listing LPDDR4x rather than LPDDR5.

That means manufacturers will have to balance the chipset's improved GPU and CPU capabilities with relatively modest memory bandwidth.

4nm manufacturing should help efficiency

The Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 is manufactured using a 4nm process, which provides the foundation for its power-efficiency improvements.

Qualcomm claims the platform delivers 10% better power savings compared with the previous generation. Combined with the efficiency of a modern 4nm design, this should help manufacturers build smartphones capable of delivering longer battery life without relying exclusively on extremely large batteries.

Actual battery life will still vary significantly depending on the display, battery capacity, modem usage, software optimization, and thermal design of each smartphone.


Quick Charge 5 support

Charging has also received an upgrade.

The Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 supports Qualcomm Quick Charge 5, allowing smartphone manufacturers to implement significantly faster wired charging solutions depending on their hardware design.

The presence of Quick Charge 5 does not mean every phone using the Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 will charge at the same speed. Charging performance remains dependent on the manufacturer, battery, charging circuitry, and included charger.


Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 vs the previous generation

Qualcomm's biggest performance claim is the 77% GPU improvement.


The company also claims:

These changes suggest Qualcomm is focusing less on simply increasing CPU clock speeds and more on making affordable smartphones feel smoother in everyday use.

Is Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 good for gaming?

For an entry-level chipset, the Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 looks considerably more gaming-focused than previous Snapdragon 4-series platforms.


The 77% GPU improvement and 90 FPS support are its most important gaming features.

However, buyers should not interpret 90 FPS support as a guarantee that demanding games will run at 90 FPS. Game optimization, resolution, graphics settings, thermal management, RAM capacity, and display refresh rate will all affect actual performance.

The Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 should instead be viewed as a platform capable of bringing higher-frame-rate gaming to more affordable smartphones.


The Snapdragon 4 Gen 5's biggest limitation

The biggest weakness of the platform may be its wireless connectivity outside cellular networks.

While the Release 17 5G modem is a significant upgrade, Qualcomm has retained Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 5.1. Higher-tier Snapdragon chips increasingly offer newer wireless standards, making the Snapdragon 4 Gen 5's connectivity package look relatively conservative for a chipset introduced in 2026.

Its LPDDR4x memory support is similarly conservative, although UFS 3.1 storage helps compensate somewhat on the storage side.

This appears to be a deliberate product positioning decision: Qualcomm is putting its resources into the areas most important to affordable smartphone users, particularly 5G, battery life, GPU performance, and everyday responsiveness.


Snapdragon 4 Gen 5: Qualcomm's new budget contender


The Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 is an interesting evolution of Qualcomm's budget smartphone strategy.

Rather than attempting to turn the Snapdragon 4 series into a mid-range platform, Qualcomm has concentrated on improving the features that users can actually feel: faster app launches, smoother interfaces, better gaming performance, stronger 5G connectivity, and longer battery life.

Its 77% GPU improvement and first-ever 90 FPS support for the Snapdragon 4 series are particularly important because they could make higher-refresh-rate gaming more common in affordable smartphones. Meanwhile, Release 17 5G and Dual SIM Dual Active provide the platform with a strong connectivity package.

The compromises are equally clear. Wi-Fi 5, Bluetooth 5.1, and LPDDR4x memory keep the platform firmly positioned below Qualcomm's higher-tier Snapdragon 6 and 7 families.

Ultimately, the Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 is not designed to compete with flagship SoCs. Its purpose is more practical: bring smoother performance, 5G, better gaming, and longer battery life to smartphones where price matters most.

With Qualcomm expecting devices from Honor, OPPO, realme, and Redmi during the second half of 2026, the Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 could become one of the more important platforms in the next generation of affordable 5G smartphones.
